Why are Kolkata businesses moving from Tally to Zoho Books?
Tally is a capable accounting package and most accountants in Kolkata know it well. The reasons owners give us for moving are about access and day-to-day work, and rarely about accounting itself.
| What the owner wants | Typical Tally set-up today | With Zoho Books |
|---|---|---|
| See receivables from the phone | Ask the accountant to send a report | Mobile app and browser, any time |
| Accounts team, owner and CA on the same books | One desktop at the office; backups sent to the CA | Each person has a login with their own permissions |
| Bank entries matched quickly | Statement keyed in or imported and matched by hand | Bank feeds or statement import with suggested matches |
| Payment reminders to customers | Phone calls from the accounts desk | Automatic reminders and a customer portal |
| Sales team sees who has not paid | Separate system, no link | Connects to Zoho CRM |
A feature-by-feature view is in our Zoho Books vs Tally comparison. If Tally is working for you and the points above do not matter, there is no need to move, and we will say so.
What moves from Tally, and what does not?
Moved into Zoho Books
- Chart of accounts, mapped from your Tally groups and ledgers
- Customers and vendors with GSTIN, addresses and credit terms
- Items with HSN or SAC codes and tax rates
- Opening balances as on the cut-over date
- Open sales invoices and purchase bills, so outstanding amounts stay bill-wise
- Opening stock, if you track it
Decided case by case
- How many past years of vouchers to import
- Cost centres and how they map to reporting tags
- Custom invoice formats, which are rebuilt as templates
- Duplicate ledgers and parties, which are merged before import
- Payroll, which usually moves to a payroll product
Your Tally company file is kept untouched as an archive.
Worked example: migration calendar for a trader with two GST registrations
An illustrative calendar for a Kolkata trading firm with a West Bengal registration, a second registration in another state, one godown and three people in accounts. It follows our benchmark of 2–4 weeks plus a 30-day parallel run.
| When | Work | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Week 1 | Export from Tally. Count ledgers, parties, items and open bills. List duplicates. Agree cut-over date with the CA. | Your office |
| Week 2 | Set up the organisation, both GST registrations, taxes, chart of accounts and invoice templates. Clean masters. | Our office |
| Week 3 | Import masters, opening balances, open invoices and bills. Tie the trial balance to Tally on the cut-over date. | Our office, review with your accountant |
| Week 4 | Connect bank accounts. Train the accounts team on their own data. First live invoices raised. | Your office |
| Days 1–30 after that | Parallel run. Entries are made in both systems and compared weekly: sales, purchases, bank, GST liability. | Weekly check, on site or by call |
| End of parallel run | Accountant signs off. Tally becomes the archive. | Your office |
How do we run a Tally to Zoho Books migration?
- Call with you and your accountant. Thirty minutes, free. We confirm Zoho Books is the right product.
- Count the Tally data. Number of ledgers, parties, items, open bills and years of history, plus what is duplicated.
- Fix the cut-over date. Usually the start of a month or quarter, agreed with your CA.
- Clean the masters. Merge duplicates, fill missing GSTINs and HSN codes.
- Configure and import. Taxes, templates, masters, balances and open documents.
- Match the trial balance. Zoho Books must agree with Tally on the cut-over date to the rupee.
- Train and go live. Role-wise sessions for billing, purchase and bank entries.
- Parallel run for 30 days, then sign-off and 30 days of included support.
How does Zoho Books handle GST for trade out of Kolkata?
A large share of Kolkata's trade is goods sent to buyers in the North East, Bihar, Jharkhand and Odisha, so interstate GST and transport documents are daily work. In Zoho Books the invoice, e-invoice and e-way bill come from one entry.
- Place of supply. IGST or CGST and SGST is applied from the customer's state on the invoice.
- E-invoicing. Invoices are sent for registration from inside Zoho Books when e-invoicing applies to you.
- E-way bills. Generated from the invoice with transporter and vehicle details.
- Returns. GST return data is prepared from the same transactions, which your CA reviews before filing.
- TDS and TCS. Deducted or collected on the transaction and reported.
Whether e-invoicing applies depends on your turnover; confirm the current threshold with your CA.
Which Kolkata businesses is Zoho Books right for?
Wholesalers and traders
Firms in Burrabazar and Canning Street with many credit customers use bill-wise receivables, reminders and the customer portal. See Zoho for trading.
Services firms
IT and consulting companies in Salt Lake Sector V and New Town use recurring invoices, time-based billing and multi-currency for overseas clients.
Exporters and groups with a Gulf entity
We run Zoho Books for Duratuf Global Trading L.L.C. and Duratuf Products FZE in the UAE, with multi-currency, bank reconciliation and receivables dashboards.
Small manufacturers in Howrah and Dankuni often start on Zoho Books for accounts and add stock and production later.
How do we work with your accountant and CA?
Accounts teams are often the people most worried about leaving Tally, and they are the ones who have to live with the result. We involve them from the first call. Training is done at your office on your own company data. Common Tally habits are mapped to their Zoho Books equivalents one by one: voucher types to transaction types, groups to account types, bill-wise details to open invoices.
Your CA gets a login and reviews the trial balance at cut-over and at the end of the parallel run. Nothing goes live on our say alone.
What about payroll and West Bengal Professional Tax?
Zoho Books is an accounting product and does not run payroll. Salaries are processed in Zoho Payroll, which posts the entries to Zoho Books. Payroll covers PF, ESI and TDS, and West Bengal Professional Tax and Labour Welfare Fund are set up for the state. We implemented Zoho People and payroll for Ratnabali Group. Details are on our HR and payroll page.
What if we outgrow Zoho Books?
Zoho Books is one step on a path. When sales, HR and support also need systems, Zoho One includes Zoho Books in a wider bundle. When plant stock and production become the main problem, look at Zoho ERP. Our broader finance work is described on the Zoho Books services page.

Frequently asked questions
How long does a Tally to Zoho Books migration take in Kolkata?
Our benchmark is 2 to 4 weeks for the migration, followed by a 30-day parallel run in which Tally and Zoho Books are both kept up to date and compared. We have completed 30+ Tally migrations. A Kolkata business with several GST registrations or many years of history is at the longer end.
How much does Zoho Books cost?
As listed by Zoho on 5 October 2026, Zoho Books has a free plan for businesses with turnover under Rs 25 lakh, and the Standard plan is Rs 749 per organisation per month billed annually. Higher plans cost more. Our implementation fee for Kolkata clients is a separate fixed price agreed after a discovery call.
Will we lose our old Tally data?
No. Masters, opening balances and open invoices and bills are moved into Zoho Books. How many years of past vouchers to bring across is decided with your accountant. Your Tally company file stays with you as an archive, and we recommend keeping a backup of it.
Can our chartered accountant keep working with us after the move?
Yes. Your accountant or CA firm in Kolkata is given their own login to Zoho Books, so there is no need to send backups back and forth. We include them in the discovery call and the parallel-run sign-off, because they are the ones who certify the books.
Does Zoho Books handle GST, e-invoicing and e-way bills?
Yes. Zoho Books produces GST-compliant invoices, supports e-invoicing and e-way bill generation, and prepares GST returns from the same data. For a Kolkata business that is the main practical change from typing figures into separate portals after billing.
Is Zoho Books enough for a wholesaler with a lot of stock?
Zoho Books has basic stock tracking. A Kolkata wholesaler with many items, several godowns or batch-wise stock usually adds Zoho Inventory, which starts at Rs 999 per organisation per month billed annually as listed by Zoho on 5 October 2026. We check this during discovery.
Do you come to our office for the migration?
Yes. Our office is on EM Bypass in Kolkata. We visit to review the Tally data with your accounts team, return to train them on their own books, and sit with your accountant for the parallel-run comparison. The configuration work in between is done from our office.
